National Urban League Mourns the Loss of Civil Rights Lawyer Carol Lani Guinier

National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial released the following statement to honor the life of civil rights lawyer Carol Lani Guinier:

“Professor Guinier was a brilliant civil rights leader who devoted her life to justice, equality, and democracy. Her bold ideas, advocacy, and bravery made her a leading voice for voting rights and the fight against systemic racism.

“Professor Guinier worked for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, where she headed the Voting Rights Project and was a law professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. She went on to teach at Harvard Law School where she became the first African American woman to be appointed a tenured professorship.

“Professor Guinier’s scholarship and mentorship inspired generations of lawyers and civil rights activists, including her son Nolan, who is currently serving as an Assistant Professor of Law at Harvard. Through them, her legacy and impact continue to live on. We send prayers to her husband Nolan Bowie, son, and her family during this time.”
