The story starts with the unique description of environments and European locales where cave dwellers hunted and sought shelter. During the period of the story, the ice age is slowly giving way to a warmer climate. Cro Magnon clans are competing for the same food sources as the Neanderthals. The Clan encounters various types of animals that thrived during that period, ranging from the wooly mammoth to the Irish elk and to the cave lion and other exotic beasts.
 
In its first chapters, the novel reveals the experience of most clans that has taught them that individuals and very small groups had very little chance of survival in such a hostile environment. Expulsion from one’s clan or the loss of too many members of a clan almost always resulted in the death of the clan. Will the last Neanderthals survive?

Lisa grew up listening to Charlie’s tales about cave-dwelling clans and the characters in those stories have been developed and expanded in “The Last Neanderthal Clan.” Charlie has drawn upon a lifetime of study of anthropology to make the book as realistic as possible.
