New CHSWC Factsheet Provides Information about the Cal/OSHA Wildfire Smoke Standard 2021

LA Testing offers laboratory services, sampling supplies and air monitoring instruments to identify wildfire pollution hazards to protect the public and to help businesses and institutions comply with Cal/OSHA regulations.

Huntington Beach, California – WEBWIRE

Last month, California’s Commission on Health and Safety and Workers’ Compensation (CHSWC) announced the release of Worker Protection from Wildfire Smoke: Cal/OSHA Wildfire Smoke Standard 2021, a publication of the School Action for Safety and Health (SASH) program. The 4-page factsheet informs employees at schools and school districts across California about Cal/OSHA’s Protection from Wildfire Smoke Standard. It includes a summary of the standard and information on the health effects of wildfire smoke, protective measures that Cal/OSHA requires, and relevant website references.

“With the increase in wildfires throughout the region in recent years, health issues associated with exposure to smoke has become a growing concern,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Wildfire smoke contains chemicals, gases, and fine particles. Cal/OSHA’s regulation (Section 5141.1 Protection from Wildfire Smoke) is designed to protect workers exposed to wildfire smoke. It requires the identification of harmful exposures, controlling harmful exposures, communication, training, and instruction (Appendix B to Section 5141.1), and specific particulate sampling requirements if an employer opts to monitor employee exposure with a direct reading instrument.”

Assisting in this effort are the air quality professionals at LA Testing. They offer laboratory testing services, sampling supplies, air monitoring instruments, and personal protective equipment (PPE). These services help companies and institutions comply with Cal/OSHA regulations for mitigating exposure risks to wildfire smoke and other respiratory hazards. In addition, LA Testing also provides laboratory services to identify smoke, soot, and odor damage to the inside of homes, schools, and other buildings impacted by wildfires.
