Call for Entries to Short Film Competition Powered by Vietnam Creative Economy Grant

Netflix is calling for applications for a short film competition powered by its Cinema Beauty - Vietnam Creative Economy Grant. Themed ‘My Vietnam’, the competition encourages filmmakers from underrepresented communities to tell stories of Vietnam —  through their own eyes.

Entry to the short film competition opens on 12 December 2021 via this website. Shortlisted projects will be carefully selected by a jury including representatives from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and experts and filmmakers in the country’s film industry, and awarded USD $10,000 each from the Netflix Cinema Beauty - Vietnam Creative Economy Grant to create a short film. The winning film, which will be announced in May 2022, will be aired on Yeah1’s YouTube channel.

In October, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Netflix announced the launch of its first Creative Economy Grant in Vietnam to support the country’s creative economy and Vietnamese filmmakers from underrepresented groups. The Cinema Beauty - Vietnam Creative Economy Grant is aimed at supporting underrepresented filmmakers in Vietnam, to create even more opportunities for their voices to be heard. This will include, and is not limited to, female filmmakers, ethnic community, people with disabilities, aspiring creators who live far from big cities such as Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, filmmakers in the LGBTQ+ community, as well as those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

The grant was announced last month during a livestream event held in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and with the participation of representatives of the Ho Chi Minh City Film Association.

Eligibility criteria

• Filmmakers must not have previously made a feature-length film. 

• Filmmakers must be a citizen of Vietnam.

• Filmmakers with limited filmmaking experience are welcome to participate.

• We strongly encourage filmmakers from outside of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to apply.

Benefits

• 10 shortlisted projects will be awarded USD $10,000 each from the Netflix Cinema Beauty - Vietnam Creative Economy Grant to create a short film.

• 10 shortlisted projects will go head to head in a competition with the winning film being selected in May 2022. 

• Shortlisted projects will receive guidance from some of Vietnam’s leading industry professionals. 

• The winning project will be published on Yeah1’s YouTube channel.
