Antifungal Spray Products Recalled Due to the Presence of Benzene
EMSL Analytical provides over-the-counter medicine, consumer product, environmental, industrial hygiene and indoor air quality (IAQ) testing services to detect benzene and other chemical hazards.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and Health Canada recently posted information about the voluntary recall of certain lots of over-the-counter antifungal spray products to the consumer level. The recall is due to the presence of benzene in some samples of the products.
Benzene is not an ingredient in these antifungal products according to the manufacturer. The aerosol products were distributed from September of 2018 through September of 2021 and were shipped to the United States, Canada and Mexico. Consumers have been advised to stop using the affected products.
This is not the first recall this year of an aerosol product over concerns about the presence of benzene. Several aerosol sunscreen products, made by different manufacturers, were also recalled earlier this year due to this same issue.
“While these recalled products are said to have low levels of benzene, this chemical is classified as a human carcinogen,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “At EMSL, our consumer product, industrial hygiene and environmental laboratories offer benzene and other chemical testing services. Testing can be instrumental for protecting the public from exposure risks and for preventing these types of costly product recalls.”
EMSL has also sponsored an educational video about benzene exposure risks that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/wqByUP13-Hk
