Dig Deeper into the Book of Colossians Verse By Verse With Dr. Jack Hetzel

What does the Epistle of the Apostle Paul to the Colossians say about Christian doctrine and conduct? According to Dr. Jack Hetzel, there are several subjects covered in the said book of the Bible. In his book Colossians Verse By Verse (ReadersMagnet; 2021), he gives a fuller understanding of every major subject that Paul mentioned in Colossians.

The Book of Colossians was written by Paul while he was imprisoned in Rome. It is one of the prison epistles (along with Ephesians, Philippians, and Philemon) and addressed to the Church in Colossae. In this epistle, Paul proclaimed Christ as the supreme power over the entire universe, and he also urged the Christians in Colossae to lead godly lives.
 
“I took each major subject in the book and wrote a chapter on it, which is to expand the understanding of what is said,” said Dr. Hetzel in his Featured Author Presentation pre-event session for The Festival of Storytellers, of which he is one of the upcoming speakers. “Of course, the Bible is very clear, but I like to bring stuff into modern English so we could all understand, maybe a little bit better.
 
“My attitude is you never try to prove anyone’s scripture but what has happened but prove the scripture by the scripture. In other words, the Bible says what it means, and it means what it says, so we are to believe it. We are to believe the Bible as if it is God personally talking to us as an individual. The Bible is God’s letters to us.”
While the insightful and thought-provoking Colossians Verse By Verse makes a great aid for personal or small group Bible study, Dr. Hetzel offers the following reminders, “Don’t pay much attention to what I write but pay a lot of attention to every scripture in this book.”

Dr. Jack Hetzel was born in West Monroe, Louisiana on November 18, 1921, to Rev. & Mrs. R. Hetzel. Jack’s father was a church planter who planted several churches in Louisiana, fourteen in Texas, two in Mississippi, and one in Arkansas.
 
He spent three years in the US Army Air Corps, three years in the US Air Force, and fourteen years in the US Army. After serving in five major battles in Europe, he served through most of the Viet Nam War. He retired as a Sergeant First Class. He taught Military Science at A&M University of Texas. 
 
Dr. Hetzel has ministered in most of Western Europe, which included England, Germany, France, Belgium, Italy, and Spain, as well as Korea, Japan, Australia, and Ghana (which is in West Africa). He obtained his first ministerial credentials from the Assemblies of God USA. He currently pastors First United Methodist Church in Big Sandy, Texas.
