LOS ANGELES - The HBO Documentary Films presentation The Blood of Yingzhou District received an Academy Award® in the category of Documentary Short Subject when the 79th annual Academy Awards® were presented at the 2007 ceremony of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Feb. 25.

The Blood of Yingzhou District tells the story of traditional Chinese obligations of family and village colliding with the terror of AIDS. The film profiles children affected by the disease, including: Nan Nan, a young girl who was shunned by relatives after her parents’ deaths and left in the care of her teenage sister; the Huang siblings, who vividly describe their ostracism at school; and Gao Jun, a young village boy from Anhui province, who lost both parents to the disease and is himself infected. Little is known about Gao Jun, even his age, and he does not speak a word until the closing minutes of the film. Yet he reveals a ferocious resolve to live, even as his extended family weighs whether or not to keep him. Producer, Thomas Lennon; director, Ruby Yang. The Blood of Yingzhou District will debut on CINEMAX in December.
