Scooters Recalled Due to Barium Exposure Risks from Surface Coatings

Last month, Health Canada announced the recall of thousands of imported 3-wheel scooters designed for young children that were sold throughout Canada from September of 2019 through August of this year. The recall occurred after the surface coating and applied surface coating components of the scooters were found to contain a barium compound in excess of the allowable limit under the Canadian Toys Regulations.
In Canada, children’s toys and related products that have a surface coating material applied to them cannot have a compound of antimony, arsenic, cadmium, selenium, or barium if more than 0.1% of the compound dissolves in 5% hydrochloric acid after being stirred for 10 minutes at 20°C.
Last year, the same agency announced the recall of over 26,000 imported retractable safety gates and hundreds of playsets because surface coatings were found to contain barium more than allowable limits.
