Children’s Health Month in Puerto Rico and Identifying Indoor and Outdoor Environmental Exposure Risks
Zimmetry Environmental provides microbial, chemical and radon testing and consulting services to identify and resolve exposure risks to protect children, families and workers.
Unfortunately, even with all we know, too many children in Puerto Rico are still being exposed to hazards that could be prevented.
Children’s Health Month is recognized each October by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other entities. It is meant to be a time to focus on the importance of protecting children’s health from environmental hazards in the places where they live, play and learn.
The CDC reports that from the earliest stages of development through puberty, children are vulnerable to exposure to environmental contaminants, such as lead. They are particularly vulnerable because their bodies are small and still developing, so they ingest and absorb more chemicals. The agency goes on to state that children’s age-appropriate behavior also exposes them to potential hazards. For instance, they crawl and play on the floor or in the yard where they may be exposed to harmful contaminants, and they often put unsafe items in their mouths.
In support of Children’s Health Month, EPA developed a month-long list of daily tips. They include everything from avoiding unnecessary pesticide use and testing a home for radon, to eliminating asthma triggers, reducing mercury exposure, protecting children from mold, reducing risks to carbon monoxide, and protecting kids from sources of lead.
“Unfortunately, even with all we know, too many children in Puerto Rico are still being exposed to hazards that could be prevented,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “At Zimmetry we support the efforts of Children’s Health Month and provide services to help safeguard our youth. Our building science, industrial hygiene and environmental experts offer indoor and outdoor environmental testing and consulting services to identify and mitigate a wide range of microbial, chemical and radiological hazards. If a problem is found, solutions to mitigate or eliminate any exposure risks can then be put in place.”
Zimmetry also sponsored an educational video about Children’s Health Month several years ago that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/zK3mLG-JWaY
