In the relaunch of his latest book, Dowlin travels back in time to tell the story of an unsung hero. He presents “Noisy River: The Saga of Captain Paul Dowlin,” a historical fiction woven from facts collected in over four years of research in libraries, museums, archives, and family stories passed down from generation to generation.

The novel follows Paul Dowlin, an ancestor of Irish immigrants who arrived in America long before the Revolutionary War. In 1859, he crossed the nation in search of adventure and progress, and soon after, he arrived in the New Mexico Territory, he joined the newly created New Mexico Volunteers to fight Confederate soldiers and sympathizers. The fighting in the Civil War in New Mexico was brief, but the battles against the native tribes took much longer. Dowlin served directly under the command of Kit Carson, the commander of the New Mexico Volunteer Army in the Civil War battles and the major campaigns against the Mescalero, Navajo, and other tribes. The combat in New Mexico during the Civil War was brief, but the fights with the native tribes lasted much longer. Dowlin participated in the Civil War engagements and major campaigns against the Mescalero, Navajo, and other tribes under the leadership of Kit Carson, the commander of the New Mexico Volunteer Army. Following his discharge from the service, Dowlin was able to purchase property and establish a successful town in what would later become Lincoln County, New Mexico. He was formerly one of the county’s biggest taxpayers and a political leader in both the county and the state.
