Power for New York - Siemens to supply equipment for Caithness Long Island Energy Center – Total order volume USD450 million
Erlangen, Feb 21, 2007 - Siemens Power Generation (PG) has been awarded a major contract to supply equipment, operation and maintenance for the Caithness Long Island Energy Center. Following the start of operation slated for 2009, the natural-gas-fired plant will be the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly combined cycle power plant on Long Island and will provide a capacity of up to 350 megawatts of electricity to the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA). The total order volume, including operations and maintenance services, is approximately USD450 million.
Caithness will be the first major power generating facility to be built on Long Island in over 30 years, making it an important component of Long Island’s portfolio of energy resources. The new power plant is intended primarily to supply electricity to Brookhaven. With over 485,000 inhabitants, Brookhaven is the fastest growing town on Long Island, which is the most populated suburban island in any U.S. state or territory.
“Siemens is playing an instrumental role in helping to meet the increasing energy demands on Long Island with its state-of-the-art gas turbine technology that will provide competitive, environmentally compatible energy to the residents of Brookhaven,” said Randy Zwirn, member of the PG Group Executive Management.
The Siemens PG scope of supply for the Caithness project comprises one gas turbine and one steam turbine. Siemens also will handle plant operations and maintenance services for the plant for a period of 17 years.
Recently Siemens secured a contract for a power plant in the state of West Virginia. Thanks to its state-of-the-art technology the plant in Longview will be one of the cleanest and most efficient coal-fired power plants in the U.S.
