James Mark Sullivan and His Battle for Irish Freedom is Presented in Dr. Daniel Schultz’s Book “Tarnished Hero”

The historical narrative of lawyer, diplomat, and patriot James Mark Sullivan and his battle for Irish freedom is presented in Dr. Daniel Schultz’s book “Tarnished Hero.”

Auburn, NY – WEBWIRE

James Mark Sullivan is a man whose life is only known in fragments and is frequently linked to controversy. Sullivan, on the other hand, was a key figure in the liberation of Ireland from British control. Dr. Daniel Schultz chronicles Sullivan’s biography, which sheds new light on a man who is rarely understood or recognized for his attempts to achieve materialistic success in his adoptive nation and gain Irish freedom.

James Mark Sullivan was a member of the post-famine Irish immigration to the United States in the late 1800s. He rose from a newsboy to a journalist to a Yale-educated lawyer after overcoming adversity in his family. After relocating to New York City, he became entangled with Tammany Hall in the “Crime of the Century,” the Becker-Rosenthal murder case. Sullivan received a patronage appointment as ambassador to Santo Domingo as a result of his efforts. His departure was prompted by bribery and corruption scandals. Another aspect that contributed to his expulsion, which has remained unexplained until now, was his attempt to subvert his government’s neutrality policy, which was linked to his links to Irish nationalism. He then founded the first indigenous Irish film studio with a strong Nationalist purpose, producing numerous silent cinema masterpieces. Following the deaths of his wife and son during the 1918 influenza outbreak, he returned to the United States. After failing to resurrect his legal profession, he relocated to Florida, where he died in relative anonymity.

Dr. Daniel Schultz is a professor emeritus at Cayuga Community College in Auburn, New York, and a winner of the prestigious Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in both teaching and scholarship.
