American Express to Provide Card Members with Increased Purchase Details Around their Recent Amazon Orders

As consumers have spent more time at home over the last year, there are more people online shopping than ever before. In fact, according to Amex Trendex[1], a trend report from American Express, 81% of consumers in the U.S. agree they are more likely to shop online than in-store this year. With more people shopping online, in February we rolled out Digital Receipts, a feature that gives U.S. Card Members access to additional information about their purchases with specific merchants, such as the merchant name and logo, order number, date of order, items purchased, details of cost and merchant description.

Today, we are expanding the feature to provide Card Members who shop on Amazon increased purchase information about their recent orders with the retailer. With the new Digital Receipts for Amazon purchases, Card Members will be able to see detailed information on their order including the specific items purchased, the order number and even delivery details. The feature is being rolled out through American Express’ partnership with Verifi and its Order Insight® solution, which enables businesses and issuers to offer enhanced transaction details to their customers. Card Members who want to view Digital Receipts for their Amazon purchases will be redirected from AmericanExpress.com and the Amex mobile app to view their purchase details within their Amazon account[2].

Previously, we surveyed both U.S. consumers and merchants about the benefits Digital Receipts would provide to them. A large majority of consumers surveyed said Digital Receipts would help them more easily distinguish legitimate vs. fraudulent charges on their card account (81%), improve their overall customer experience (75%), and make them less likely to dispute a charge (72%)1.  And 78% of surveyed U.S. merchants[3] agreed that giving customers access to additional transaction information through Digital Receipts would help improve customer satisfaction. Additionally, 79% of those merchants agreed this feature could also help them avoid unnecessary disputes and chargebacks.

“We know our customers value transparency and rely on us to introduce new products and services that make their lives easier,” said Ramesh Devaraj, Vice President, Global Merchant Processing and Policy at American Express. “With this in mind, we rolled out Digital Receipts with a select group of Merchants earlier this year and are excited to continue to evolve the product today with Amazon. Digital Receipts is one of the many ways we are evolving to assist with our customers’ changing needs and we are excited to continue building on this progress and expand to more Merchants in the future.”
