Whether it’s infection control, air filtration or just general air quality, building occupants today are so much more aware of the significance of building safety and how indoor environmental quality (IEQ) plays such a pivotal role.

May is recognized as Building Safety Month and following the COVID-19 pandemic, which temporarily shut down millions of buildings across the globe, and caused many others to change the way they operate, building safety is more important than ever.

This year’s theme is “Prevent, Prepare, Protect. Building Codes Save.” Building Safety Month is supported by the nonprofit International Code Council and many other partners. A major area of focus during the month of recognition includes educating people about the need to be prepared for natural disasters. In recent years in Puerto Rico, this has included everything from a pandemic to tropical storms and hurricanes.

“Whether it’s infection control, air filtration or just general air quality, building occupants today are so much more aware of the significance of building safety and how indoor environmental quality (IEQ) plays such a pivotal role,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Safeguarding building occupants during and following a pandemic is crucial for helping to return to normal. At Zimmetry Environmental, we are strong advocates of Building Safety Month and for the past 19 years, our business has revolved around providing safe and healthy conditions in residential, commercial and institutional properties throughout Puerto Rico and the surrounding region.”

Zimmetry’s building science, industrial hygiene and IEQ professionals provide testing, monitoring and consulting services for biological, chemical and radiological pollutants; infectious pathogens; and asthma triggers, allergens and respiratory irritants. Their building assessments determine the effectiveness of infection control efforts, HVAC system filtration, contaminant control in building water systems, and identifying conditions that could lead to mold growth. Zimmetry is also regularly called upon to investigate dangers associated with asbestos, lead-based paints and other exposure risks. If a problem is discovered, the experts at Zimmetry can help to eliminate or mitigate the concern. Many of these same services are also essential for keeping companies and institutions in regulatory compliance.
