“Haddad shows strong fantasy instincts.” Kirkus Reviews

Military veteran M.A. Haddad’s attempt to church out a story that readers will find entertaining and fun to read commence with “The Shadow of the Staff: A Wizard’s Revenge” (ReadersMagnet; 2020). The story features likable fantasy character with several charming moments of introspection.
The fantasy adventure “The Shadow of the Staff: A Wizard’s Revenge” overlaps the themes of identity, choice, tolerance, and vocation. Thousands of years after the defeat of the dark wizard Porttia by the Great Staff Bearers, a group of legendary heroes, the last of the heroes’ descendants is called upon to halt a new threat of war in the mystical continent of Hatu, which, according to Kirkus Reviews, is largely a facsimile of Tolkien’s Middle Earth.
A celebration is held in the elven city of Fallquint to commemorate the Great Staff Bearers’ triumph over Porttia. It’s time for the heroes’ last descendant, Burton Brew the Myopian, to make the journey to the hall of the elf lord Mindeloria. However, by the time Burton arrives in Fallquint, they find ominous signs of devastation by marauding Orcs. In Fallquint, he learns that the Dwarf homeland of Rolling Hills has been invaded by the evil forces of the vengeful wizard Maloneaous. War has returned to Hatu.
Burton is tasked with delivering a message to the dwarves in the Mystic Mountains as the rest of the world prepares for battle. Along the way, he finds help from the Ranger Tordin, an elf princess, two loyal direwolves, and a pair of dwarf warriors. All the while, Burton must come to terms with the horrors of the evil he faces, and with a mysterious destiny that’s imbued him with remarkable powers.
