Toshiba launches GridDB Cloud, a Database Managed Service for Big Data and IoT

Hassle-free database setup, monitoring and operation, and easy integration with cloud-native applications

KAWASAKI – WEBWIRE

Toshiba Digital Solutions Corporation (Toshiba) today announced the launch of GridDB Cloud, a public cloud Database Managed Service for IoT and Big Data workloads. GridDB Cloud offers significant time-saving in database setup, monitoring, operation, and easy integration with cloud-native applications.

Until recently, on-premise database deployment has been the preferred choice for applications that require high performance and extra layers of security. However, the surge in digital transformation leads to a rapid increase in cloud-native applications, and the utilization of cloud databases has exploded as a result. Furthermore, agile development has become mainstream, and as a consequence, there is a growing demand for Database Managed Services that are easy to operate and can be used instantly.

GridDB Cloud meets the needs of digital transformation and agile development through the deployment of GridDB as a managed service on the public cloud while maintaining the high performance and security of on premise GridDB.

GridDB Cloud Features

  1. Provided as a Cloud Managed Service
Database setup takes a lot of time and effort, from preparing the required resources such as servers, storage, and networks to setting up the system. GridDB Cloud offers 6 models which vary according to the scale and usage, and you can start the service quickly by selecting the appropriate models according to your needs. As your data increases, GridDB Cloud can be easily expanded by changing the models or adding servers and storage. In addition, database operation and monitoring are handled by our experts so customers can focus more on strategic initiatives.
  2. Easy and quick integration with cloud native apps
You can easily call and operate GridDB from cloud-native applications and a variety of managed services provided by the public cloud via JDBC*1 and WebAPI*2. Also, by running the application in the same public cloud as GridDB Cloud, high-speed access similar to on-premise offering is possible.
  3. Enhanced data collection and data visualization functions
Integration with Fluentd*3 and Azure IoT Edge*4,5 are possible when time series data needs to be collected in real time from IoT devices. On the other hand, Embulk*6 can be used for ingesting data in batch. In addition, GridDB Cloud operation tool can be used to display data in graphs. For other data visualizations, Grafana*5,7 can also be used instead.

GridDB Cloud will be sold via the GridDB EC site. Both credit card or invoice payment are accepted, and price starts from 295,000 yen (excluding tax) per month.

To celebrate the launch of GridDB Cloud, we are giving 20% discount off of the monthly usage fee of the basic services for one year (12 months) for customers who sign up by September 2021. For example, the price of the Standard model with a single node configuration is reduced from 295,000 yen monthly (excluding tax) to 236,000 yen monthly (excluding tax).

Future development of GridDB and GridDB Cloud will continue towards the support for digital transformation and cyber physical system using IoT and Big Data.
