Forbes unveils its latest cover which has been transformed into contemporary art in the form of a non-fungible token (NFT), by a world-renowned artist – a first for the publishing industry. The digital art, featuring Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, titled “Merchants of the Metaverse,” is a one-of-a-kind NFT and will be sold at a limited 24-hour auction beginning 1:30 p.m. EST Wednesday, April 7 and closing 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 8. Forbes will donate all proceeds to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF). “We like to say our covers of the world’s billionaires and next-generation entrepreneurs are the most-valuable real-estate in media for their ability to capture the people who are shaping our world in real time,” said Forbes Chief Content Officer, Randall Lane. “As we watch the rapid rise of cryptocurrency and its mainstreaming across the world, we’re capturing a unique moment in time and also playing a role ourselves. In turning our cover into an NFT, we’re demonstrating that journalism is as immutable as the one-of-a-kind artwork portrays and helping two key organizations – the CPJ and IWMF – which are committed to helping advance and protect journalists.” The Winklevoss NFT cover will be auctioned on Nifty Gateway. The NFT platform, Nifty Gateway was purchased by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss in November 2019.

The magazine cover story, “Revenge of the Winklevii,” co-authored by Michael del Castillo, Susan Adams and Antoine Gara, reveals how the duo is at the center of the future of money and have emerged as leaders of a technological movement whose core operating principle involves digitizing the records of all assets globally, decentralizing control and cutting out gatekeepers.

·        The original Forbes cover was photographed by Award-winning photographer, Michael Prince. The cover was then transformed into a dynamic piece of contemporary NFT art, created by long-time digital artist Yoshi Sodeoka. Sodeoka, originally from Japan, has lived and worked in New York City for three decades, producing neo-psychedelic videos, GIFs and prints that he has shown at the Centre Pompidou, the Tate Britain and the Museum of Modern Art. His work is in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

·        Through their holding company, Gemini Space Station, which owns their Gemini crypto exchange and Nifty Gateway, and via investments made by their family office, Winklevoss Capital, the duo, with a combined net worth of $6 billion, have invested in no fewer than 25 digital assets startups.

·        In the article, Forbes writes “These fledgling companies are laying the foundation for what the brothers hope will be a new virtual world that they and others call the “metaverse,” in which digital assets like art, music, real estate and even entire businesses are created, bought and sold—and, most importantly, governed—by the blockchain.” For the complete story and more, visit: here.

·        This cover will be the first of five consecutive covers featured in the Forbes 2021 Billionaires magazine issue.
