From Dancing at Home to Performing in Theaters

The success of Robert Battle through the eyes of his cousin

WEBWIRE

Robert Louis Battle is the current artistic director of America’s Cultural Ambassadors to the World, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. He is a very talented and decorated performer who has won multiple prestigious awards. He also graduated from The Julliard School in 1994 and later on was named as one of the Masters of African American Choreography by the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in 2005. Battle epitomizes success, and he has done it by doing the thing he is passionate about. However, his success was fueled by hardships and by people who believed and stood by him. It is just one facet of his entire journey.

Dessie Williams, Battle’s cousin, is one of the people who were instrumental to his success. She will let us in on their journey and inspire faith in everyone as she presents her book, “His Wonders to Perform: Mama, Daddy, and My Cousin Robert Battle.”

The book is the story of Anna and Willie Horne, the author’s parents, and Battle’s adopted parents. It is a recollection that circles around the candid memories of the young Dessie and the lessons her parents imparted to her and Robert. It offers a sense of reality as Williams has painted her characters in a genuine and unromanticized manner. Their experiences as a family will invoke hope and inspiration. They were able to navigate every challenge life threw at them. Moreover, the best part of the book is the fact that Dessie Williams was able to preach her faith. She inspires an unyielding faith which was the prevalent theme in most of the stories scribbled inside the book.

Overall, the book is a tasteful mix between success and hardships, a real testament to God’s faithfulness and an inspiring story of success through resilience.

About the Author

Dessie Horne Williams is an eighty-one-year-old retired English teacher who plied her trade in the Miami-Dade school system for thirty-two years. A 1957 graduate of Tallahassee’s Florida A&M University, Mrs. Williams is the mother of two adult biological children and one “adopted” son, her cousin Robert Louis Battle. A lover of all things artistic, Williams has devoted much of her life to the pursuit of the joys found in literature, music, and the performing arts, and considers a moment during a sixties Q and A session where her idol Bette Davis answered her question one of the high points of her life. Currently residing in Miami, Florida, Williams is, and has been, for the past fifty years the minister of music at the Wactor Temple African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church.
