Millions of Metal Shelving Units Recalled Due to Potential Injury Hazard from Shelves Bending or Breaking

Advanced MicroAnalytical offers product failure analysis and other material testing services to ensure products meet manufacturer specifications.

Salem, NH – WEBWIRE

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced that approximately 2.2 million shelving units are being recalled due to an injury hazard. The recalled units, built with a steel frame and plywood shelves, were manufactured in the United States and sold online through major online retailers from January of 2015 through September of 2020.

According to CPSC, the shelves can fail to support the 800-pound weight load as stated on the packaging, posing an injury hazard to the consumer. At the time of the recall notice, the manufacturer had received seven reports of shelves bending or breaking due to heavy items placed on shelves, including one injury to a consumer who suffered a broken toe after items fell when the shelving unit broke. Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the recalled shelving units and to contact the manufacturer to receive a full refund.

These types of incidents highlight the importance of testing for strength before a product enters the market and the need for ongoing testing during production. It also brings to light the power of failure analysis investigations to uncover what may have gone wrong.

Providing this critical support and expertise are the scientists and engineers at Advanced MicroAnalytical. Their materials science division can assist in all types of failure analysis investigations with a comprehensive suite of mechanical testing capabilities. These include simulating strains and stresses on materials and comparing forced failure to field failure units. Advanced MicroAnalytical also analyzes the microstructure and mechanical properties of metallic materials and alloys to ensure that chosen materials are capable of performing to their requirements. These, and other testing services offered, are instrumental for product development, quality control, failure analysis and forensic investigations.
