Dell Receives Prominent Environmental Leadership Award

Global Recycling Program Recognized as Industry Model

Dell is the recipient of the National Recycling Coalition’s ninth annual Recycling Works Award for its longstanding efforts to promote individual producer responsibility.

The award, which will be presented tonight at NRC’s annual gala, recognizes Dell’s leadership in recycling computer equipment and its global policies making it easier for customers to become effective environmental stewards.

“When it comes to product recovery and recycling, our commitment to our customers and our shared Earth is clear and simple: programs that help consumers make a difference will always be a cornerstone of Dell’s global business,” said Dell Chairman and CEO Michael Dell. “From the time we conceive and design a product to the point when that product is responsibly recycled, we seek to minimize our company’s impact on the world around us and empower our customers to join us.”

“Dell’s innovative environmental initiatives implemented in the last year put them head and shoulders above any other electronics company,” said Kate Krebs, NRC’s executive director. "They are showing vision, leadership, and commitment at levels we’ve never seen in this industry.”

Since 1998, the NRC’s Recycling Works Award has honored an organization or individual who has demonstrated leadership in recycling and conservation of the environment. Previous recipients include Starbucks, McDonald’s Corp. and Environmental Defense.

Dell’s commitment to environmental responsibility includes efforts to provide customers easy-to-use and responsible product recovery programs. The company has implemented several programs to encourage free and easy recycling. Key initiatives include:

Free Consumer Global Recycling: Dell is the only computer manufacturer that offers consumers no-charge recycling services for its own branded computer equipment globally without requiring new product purchases. Dell completed the rollout of its global recycling policy in December 2006.

Reconnect Program: Through Dell’s alliance with Goodwill Industries in several markets, consumers can donate unwanted electronics of any brand in any condition at Goodwill intake sites. All equipment collected is handled under Dell’s product-recovery guidelines. The program is currently available in Central and South Texas, San Diego and San Francisco, the state of Michigan, western North Carolina and the Pittsburgh area.

Asset Recovery Services: Dell offers product recovery services that help business and institutional customers responsibly manage the retirement of used IT equipment. In 2006, Dell increased products recovered from customers for reuse or recycling, as measured by weight, by 72 percent compared to the previous year. The company has set a goal to recover 125 million kilograms (about 275 million pounds) of product from customers by 2009.

Computer Donation: Through Dell’s partnership with the National Cristina Foundation, customers can donate any working computer system to non-profit organizations in their areas. NCF matches consumer donations to local not-for-profit organizations, public agencies and schools. The program is available throughout the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France and major markets in Brazil.

The company reaffirmed its longstanding commitment to environmental responsibility during each stage of the product lifecycle by launching a new Web site, www.dell.com/earth, which provides consumers and businesses in-depth information on Dell’s environmental programs. Among the new features is an “energy counter” that tracks the accumulated energy and carbon savings impact enabled by Energy Smart features on Dell products.
