Los Angeles and San Francisco Once Again Make the Top 50 List of Cities with Bed Bug Infestations

An established pest control company published its annual Top 50 Bed Bug Cities list last month and it included two major population centers in California. The highest ranking California city from the list was Los Angeles (9^th) followed by San Francisco (22^nd). The list was compiled from bed bug data from residential and commercial treatments from the pest control company’s operations spanning from December 1^st of 2019 through November 30^th of 2020.

Bed bugs are small, flat, parasitic insects that feed on the blood of people and animals, usually while they sleep. They are experts at hiding, which can make them difficult to find. The presence of bed bugs can be an ongoing annoyance because they may cause itching and loss of sleep for people living in, or visiting, an infested property. Some people may even suffer allergic reactions to their presence.

“The good news for California residents is no other cities from the state made the top 50 list,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at LA Testing. “Los Angeles actually dropped 5 spots and San Francisco dropped 9. Even with these improvements, bed bug infestations are a major concern for hotels, resorts, dorms and apartment complexes throughout the state. Treating a minor infestation is far less costly and easier than treating the same infestation after it becomes more widespread. A dust sample is collected and sent to the laboratory where it is analyzed using advanced DNA-based techniques. If results indicate the insects are present, corrective actions can then be implemented to eradicate the pests before conditions get worse.”
