Approximately 100 Residents of Apartment Complex on the West Coast Temporarily Moved Due to Legionella Concerns

LA Testing offers PCR and traditional culturing methods to quickly and accurately identify the microbial pathogen that causes Legionnaires’ disease and Pontiac fever from all types of environmental samples.

Huntington Beach, CA – WEBWIRE

A county health department in Oregon recently notified neighbors in the immediate vicinity of a North Portland apartment building where Legionnaires’ disease has been detected, to be aware of any signs of illness and ways to lower the risk and spread of Legionella in their homes and buildings.

This warning came as the county temporarily moved almost 100 residents of the apartment complex into motels until the building’s water system could be disinfected. All of these actions occurred after it was discovered that six residents had Legionnaires’ disease and four residents are presumed to have the illness. Another person who spent time at a property very close to the complex was also found to have Legionnaires’ disease. There has been one fatality linked to the outbreak and multiple people had to be hospitalized.

“Legionnaires’ disease is a serious type of pneumonia caused by a bacteria known as Legionella, which typically lives in water,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at LA Testing. “If people inhale contaminated water from building water systems that are not adequately maintained they could become sick. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that Legionnaires’ disease is deadly for approximately 1 in 10 people who get it. Therefore, the agency states that buildings may need a water management program to reduce the risk for Legionnaires’ disease. In fact, 9 of 10 CDC investigations show almost all outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease were caused by problems preventable with more effective water management.”

On the West Coast, LA Testing is one of the premier providers of Legionella testing from environmental samples. They offer all of the sampling supplies needed and have sponsored an educational video about Legionella and monitoring building water systems that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/F_Ggg_uaL_s.
