A Horse Family

For over twenty years Karin Matey trained her six horses, four of them foals she raised to adulthood. The story of the unique bonds that developed she shares in “My American Horse Family.” Born and raised on a West German family farm, Karin always had a great affinity with animals. Her dream was to have her own horse farm, which after many years she realized in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. In her book she takes us on her journey and shares the wisdom gained from it.
 
Every member of her horse family is a striking individual with a special way of getting along with the others. In each chapter Karin tells the story of one of her six horses, Krizta, Cairo, Misty, Keanu, Sebastian, and Hannover, and her adventures with them as they grow into adult horses. An aspiring dressage rider, Karin discovers her true joy and vocation in finding her place in her horse family with all the fun to be had and hard work that requires.
 
Karin yearns to become a member of their herd, on their terms, and in “My American Horse Family” she tells us stories of what this means. A horse family is a herd, and a herd needs a leader. Over the years Karin learns that to fulfill her role in her horse family she must be that herd leader.
 
Showing unconditional love toward your horses brings reciprocation, but with love must come commitment. Horses live in a human world, and as the horse owner becomes one of the herd, she or he must bear the responsibility of leadership, one that can’t be let down for a moment.

About the Author
The author, Karin Matey is a modern children’s book writer who has raised and trained four young horses from foal to championship. As a child and born in Germany, she developed a special connection with animals. When she was a teenager, she immigrated to the United States and now lives on a farm with her husband, daughter, and five horses. The author believes that animals, especially horses, have taught her to remain humble, and that a life spent surrounded by nature and with horses provides a person with true wealth.
