California Residents Advised of Potential Lead Hazards Lurking in Homes

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 24 million housing units across the U.S. have significant lead-based paint hazards. Of these homes, found in California and every other state, the agency reports that about 4 million have young children living in them.

This is bad news as lead exposure can affect nearly every system in the body and is especially true for children. They are particularly vulnerable to lead exposure and the CDC states that no safe blood lead level in children has ever been identified.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that if a home was built before 1978, there is a good chance it has lead-based paint. The EPA also reports that lead from paint, including lead-contaminated dust, is one of the most common causes of lead poisoning. Deteriorating lead-based paint is a hazard and needs immediate attention as it can contaminate household dust. Any demolition, remodeling and renovation activities without the proper safety precautions in place can make the situation even worse. Lead dust can also be tracked into a home from soil outside that is contaminated by exterior lead-based paints that have deteriorated over time.

Lead in tap water is yet another concern in some households. The CDC states that lead can be found in some metal water taps, interior water pipes or pipes connecting a house to the main water pipe in the street. Lead found in tap water frequently comes from the corrosion of older fixtures or from the solder that connects pipes.
