Popular Microwavable Sandwich Brand Recalled Due to Potential Glass and Plastic Contamination
EMSL Analytical’s Materials Testing lab can identify for the presence of filth and extraneous material in consumer products.
A large company that produces many of the best-known prepared food brands in the U.S. reported a recall that includes over 760,000 pounds of certain 12-pack microwavable sandwiches. The recall was initiated after the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Inspection Service (USDA) found that these popular microwavable sandwiches may be contaminated with pieces of glass and hard plastic. Unfortunately, over 760,000 pounds of the recalled product were already shipped to stores across the country before the potential contamination was announced.
The recall was initially reported after four different consumers found “extraneous material” in their microwavable sandwiches, one consumer reported a minor mouth injury. The USDA classifies this a “Class I” recall, which involves a “health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”
“The recalled microwavable sandwiches were distributed to retail stores nationwide before the USDA identified and reported on the potential contamination,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “It is important for consumers to be aware of this recall notice and to not eat the product subject to the recall. At EMSL, our materials testing scientists can identify for the presence of filth and extraneous material through our highly accurate testing services. It is essential to test for these contaminants, especially with food products, as serious health consequences can be the result.”
With a state-of-the-art facility, the scientists at EMSL Analytical, Inc. offer materials testing services and food testing services to identify for a wide range of materials, pathogens and contaminants. Before food manufacturers, distributors, importers and regulatory agencies release their products to the public, it is essential to get the proper testing completed. This testing is instrumental for confirming that raw ingredients, production surfaces and final products meet all quality control criteria and food safety regulations.
