Powerful and charismatic, this tale demonstrates life in an early submarine. It is filled with fun adventures as well as terrifying struggles of being in an unusual environment.

A biography of Henry Dacre Stoker, “Ships in the Night” starts with him at the age of 12 wanting to join the British navy. He grows up to be a naval officer, a lieutenant commanding Australia’s submarine the AE2. After the disappearance in the waters around New Guinea of the AE1, Stoker finds himself the captain of Australia’s only remaining submarine.

With the outbreak of WWI, Stoker requests to be allowed to take his submarine to the northern hemisphere to help the war effort. The request is granted and he and his crew find themselves part of the Gallipoli campaign. Following engagements with the Turkish navy, the AE2 is sunk and the crew captured. Stoker and his buddies make two escape attempts.

After the war, the story shifts to another chapter in Dacre’s life. He marries and follows his cousin Bram, into the London theatre. WWII occurs and Dacre is again called to active duty.  The timeline continues fast forward to celebrate his life until the very end.

The story takes audiences through a roller coaster of emotions they won’t regret. There is danger, suspense, excitement, joy, and some heartwarming moments that will surely resonate. The end is also a satisfying wrap for the whole ride.
