Ann Houston-Sago tells how it is to deal with an LGBTQ+ daughter in “A Mother’s Choice”

A lot has been written and talked about conservative, religious parents whose children are LGBTQ+ and their different reactions to their children coming out. There are different outcomes from different families, but for Ann Houston-Sago, author of the parenting memoir “A Mother’s Choice” (ReadersMagnet; 2020), the outcome is to love and support her daughter.
 
In “A Mother’s Choice,” Houston-Sago shares how she had grappled with, among other things, her conservative church’s teachings about LGBTQ+ people when her daughter, who still serves in the military, came out as gay. Disowning or cutting off her daughter for her sexuality would mean ending their mother-daughter relationship, as well as her vocation as a mother. This book is her testimony as not just a Christian but a Christian mother who had to make a tough choice.
 
Kristine Morris of Foreword Reviews gave 3 stars of 5 for “A Mother’s Choice” in her review, praising the book for its “raw, conversational narrative” and insights into the stresses the author and her daughter faced when they explore questions of identity.

Ann Houston-Sago’s passion for serving others began when she was nine years old. She took her first flight from Los Angeles, California to Spokane, Washington, a flight that set the course of her life. She was treated like royalty and knew then that she wanted to make everyone feel as special as the stewardess had made her feel. Seventeen years would pass before she finally decided to follow her dream of becoming a flight attendant, a job she held for eighteen years.
 
After her flying career, she continued to pursue avenues of service that led her to obtain both her BA and MS degrees, degrees that she currently uses to help within the non-profit arena. Ann’s commitment to service also encompasses her duties both within her church and as a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., an organization whose purpose is to promote empowerment through education and community outreach.
 
Writing, although not new to Ann, has become a divine quest. The need for honest, caring, and straightforward commentary is the impetus that demands that thoughts become reality through the written word. To this end, her first book, “Clean Dirt,” was published.
 
Her current endeavor, “A Mother’s Choice,” speaks to the internal struggles between ingrained religious beliefs and maternal instincts.
 
Ann Houston-Sago is married to Thomas, and has two daughters, three grandchildren, and both a son- and a daughter-in-law. Family is everything.
