Californians Encouraged to Test Homes and Buildings During National Radon Action Month

LA Testing offers indoor environmental quality (IEQ) laboratory testing services, sampling supplies and test kits to identify radon and other exposure risks in homes, schools, offices and other buildings.

The California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) website on radon encourages all of the state’s residents to test their homes for radon, fix their homes if they have a radon problem and to build new homes that are radon-resistant. The agency also reports that radon has been found in every county in the state.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas released in rock, soil and water that can build up to dangerous levels inside a home or other type of building. This includes new and old homes, well-sealed and drafty homes, and homes with or without a basement. The gas typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into a home or building through cracks and other holes in the foundation. While radon from soil gas is the main cause of problems, in some situations it can also enter a building through well water.

People cannot see, smell or taste radon so the only way to know if it is a problem in a home or building is to have it tested. It is also important to recognize that two structures right next to each other could easily have different indoor radon levels due to differences in construction and other factors.

“This month happens to be National Radon Action Month and the cold winter season is the best time of the year to test for this radioactive gas,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at LA Testing. “It’s a simple and important test to perform as radon is believed to be the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. CDPH, EPA and the U.S. Surgeon General urge people to protect their health by testing their homes, schools and other buildings. Fortunately, if a problem is found, it can be fixed. At LA Testing we are pleased to offer this service, along with easy-to-use test kits, to residents throughout California.”

LA Testing has also sponsored an educational video about National Radon Action Month that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/SAOP0zz6yjo.
