“In heaven, there’s a mansion for us.”

“No one lives forever. This is troubling enough for adults bombarded with rising death tolls during the COVID-19 pandemic, but it’s even more unsettling for those encountering death for the first time. More than ever, children need age-appropriate content that portrays death as part of the human experience, and Lynda Daniele targets this need with ‘Grandpa Nick’s Bump.’ She addresses children who have lost a grandparent to cancer, but her book could also inspire broader discussions about death, grief, and even the afterlife,” reads the opening paragraph of a book review by Grace Utomo of the San Francisco Book Review.
Author Lynda M. Daniele took a writing workshop at her local YMCA to deal with the loss of her husband, Nick and started writing a story for kids about her husband’s struggle with meningioma and the youngsters he was chaperoning for in the community. The four kids had no grandfather, and they wanted him to fill in that gap for them. Grandpa Nick was more than happy to take up this responsibility.
The book goes on to emphasize the great significance that Grandpa Nick played in these kids’ lives – each kid had their own quirks and characteristics, and Nick knew exactly how to get along with all of them together. Everything appeared picture-perfect and fine, up until one of the kids discovered a bump on the side of his head. From this point onwards, the kids unknowingly experience life-altering change, and a valuable lesson in life, death, and loss ensues – however, solace is found in the memory of the kids’ bond with Grandpa Nick, one solidified through a genuine connection of love and companionship.
Robert Buccellato of the US Review of Books reviewed this book, saying: “Told with quickness and frankness, it openly exposes kids to some of the grim realities of life and uncertain speed in which they sometimes unfold.”
Seattle Book Review’s Rachel Dehning gave the book a 4.5 out of 5-star rating, commenting that:
“For such a big and potentially life-altering subject for kids, Lynda Daniele created a children’s book that is appropriate and contains the correct message that needs conveying in a time like in the book.” She proceeds to say: “I felt that the illustrations were appropriate for the amount of text given in the story, and they played a role in telling the story themselves through the emotions shown on the characters.”

Death can be sudden and unexpected, which can be hard for kids to grasp. “The conclusion is abrupt as well, making closure feel unattainable, which holds great importance for young ones,” says Jennifer Padgett of the Portland Book Review.
“I recommend this book to religious families looking for a book to help them talk about faith, loss, and death,” says the Manhattan Book Review’s Helen Vernier.
