Dallas T. Tillman was a black man growing up in Mississippi- planting and farming, harvesting cotton, corn, sweet potatoes, and other crops. He and his brother were busy supporting their mom, who was diabetic, when his dad left. Each time she fainted, she was saddled up to a carriage and driven home. She’d be back out in the baking sun the very next day working with her boys. The Tillman household moved to California in the 1950s, but it wasn’t until the early 1960s that he met his soon-to-be wife Marie Debose, and their chemistry grew while Dallas was selling encyclopedias in San Francisco. He was committed to making her his - and this is their story, even though she was thirteen years older and married to a butcher.
“I met my wife in San Francisco, in June of 1962. Her son was still in dapples. He was about one and a half years old. She had a daughter about 5 years old and an older daughter about 13 years old, and a son who was allergic to all seafood products.
