Airly Selects The People’s Network to Track Air Quality Around the Globe

With the Network live in over 2,300 cities around the globe, new user, Airly, will empower millions of individuals with knowledge about the air they breathe

SAN FRANCISCO -- (December 17, 2020) - Helium, the company behind one of the world’s first peer-to-peer wireless networks, announces today that it has teamed up with Airly, an IoT company providing air quality monitoring solutions globally, to make air pollution information accessible and understandable to everyone.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution kills an estimated seven million people worldwide every year, while nine out of 10 people breathe air that exceeds WHO’s guideline limits containing high levels of pollutants, with low- and middle-income countries suffering from the highest exposures. As such, air pollution is categorized as a major threat to health and climate.

To mitigate air pollution and subsequent dangers from toxic respiration, Airly is dedicated to using advanced data science technology and AI-based algorithms to provide access to accurate, hyper-local data about air pollution in communities worldwide. Airly uses sensors that are distributed globally to measure air quality in immediate surroundings. Airly’s sensors will be deployed through Helium’s peer-to-peer wireless Network, The People’s Network, which has coverage that has rapidly grown to more than 1,200,000 sq. miles across over 2,300 cities throughout North America and Europe, and now expanding to Asia.

“We’re incredibly excited about the potential this partnership brings,” stated Airly CEO Wiktor Warchałowski. “We needed an IoT network with reach and scalability. Helium’s LoRaWAN technology allows us to scale our reach while being independent of data providers to continue growing the number of active sensors globally without added costs. We see The People’s Network as the future of connectivity and are proud to be a partner in its global growth.”

Airly devices and the Airly air quality mapping application allow citizens, businesses, and governments to identify the locations and concentrations of dangerous airborne emissions capable of harming human health and the environment. Through this partnership, Airly provides the data and tools necessary to inform and alert the public of unseen dangers lurking in the air around their homes and businesses in real-time.

“This year has proven that human and environmental health must be prioritized and protected from harmful air quality and emissions, especially as the fires ravaged our home base state of California,” remarked Amir Haleem, CEO, and Co-founder of Helium. “Air quality solutions have been a huge priority for our team. We’re looking forward to continuing our growth together and are excited to partner with Airly to protect our communities and help prevent exposure to dangerous air quality caused by wildfires and smog.”
