Planet FWD, the company tackling climate change through the expansion of climate-friendly food, today launches Moonshot, the first explicitly climate-friendly snack brand. Starting with three flavors of carbon-neutral crackers that are certified USDA Organic, Kosher, plant-based, no sugar added and non-GMO, Moonshot crackers are now widely available for $5.99 a box at moonshotsnacks.com. Snackers in the Bay Area can also purchase Moonshot at Zero Grocery, the first online zero-waste grocer in the U.S., starting Dec. 17. In addition, the company is announcing $2.5 million in seed plus funding, led by Emerson Collective and joined by Concrete Rose, MCJ Collective and Arlan Hamilton, as well as existing investors, including BBG Ventures, January Ventures and Kapor Capital among others.

According to research from the UN in 2019, approximately 25-30% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from food production. More alarming, scientists believe that, if we do nothing to change how we produce our food, we will have just 60 years of topsoil, the life force of our food, left. Healthy soil plays a critical role in absorbing carbon, filtering water and creating nutrient-dense food. Though progress is being made to reduce the food industry’s impact on climate change, we have an opportunity to push much further.

Enter regenerative agriculture. Regenerative agriculture is a set of climate-friendly farming practices that include limiting or eliminating tillage, cover cropping, reducing or eliminating chemicals, integrating livestock, and introducing biodiversity. In addition to capturing more carbon and drawing it down into the soil, these practices strengthen the resilience of farms to extreme weather events like droughts and floods, improve soil health and produce more nutrient-dense food. Pre-dating industrial agriculture by millennia, the re-emergence of this practice still reflects indigenous wisdom from across the globe and a holistic approach to managing land.

“We are living in a very special moment where we still have a window of opportunity to solve climate change. However, this window won’t last,” shared Julia Collins, Founder and CEO of Planet FWD. “That’s why we need to make this the decade of climate action. Moonshot is making it easier for every person to do their part.”

Focusing on snacks gives Moonshot an opportunity to take a bite out of climate change, as the global snack market is on track to be a $605B industry in the next five years. As consumer demand for climate-friendly products continues to grow, Moonshot offers consumers a climate-friendly option when snacking.

“Every person should have the opportunity to make choices that align with their desire to live on a healthy planet. I created Moonshot to activate more consumers in the growing movement to address climate change,” added Collins. “The mission of Moonshot is to unite the power of millions of consumers to take action on climate change, beginning with how we eat.

The crackers are certified USDA Organic and made with regeneratively grown ingredients. Moonshot is setting a new precedent by forging direct connections with farmers to source ingredients. For example, Moonshot sources its crackers’ main ingredient, Organic Edison Wheat, from Hedlin Farms, a 4th-generation farm and 1st-generation regenerative farm. Moonshot Snacks is also a certified WBENC woman-owned business and BIPOC-founded and owned.

Aligned with its mission of being climate-friendly, Moonshot is devoted to measuring and tracking its carbon footprint in order to sequester, reduce and offset the company’s impact on the environment. That’s why the company has committed to becoming a Climate Neutral Certified brand, in partnership with Climate Neutral, an independent non-profit organization with rigorous certification standards. To offset any emissions the company couldn’t sequester or reduce, it partnered with carbon offset producer NativeEnergy. The crackers are packaged in a 100% recycled carton and all shipping is carbon neutral via carbon offsets.

In addition to Moonshot, Planet FWD is building a regenerative food platform to help other food companies satisfy and grow consumer demand for climate-friendly food products and ensure that farmers are valued for their work as vital stewards of the land. To continue fueling platform development, Planet FWD has raised additional funding.

“Through its sustainable and climate-friendly ingredient platform, Planet FWD is building a movement of more climate-conscious farmers and producers who can lead us toward a better, more sustainable future,” shared Fern Mandelbaum, Managing Director at Emerson Collective. “Through Julia’s inclusive leadership and passion, Planet FWD is helping create a new standard for the food industry and its role in being part of climate solutions.”
