MAY 20: FIRING UP THE GRILL
Profile America for Friday, May 20. With winter a rapidly fading memory and spring at its best, lots of us will be spending time on our decks, balconies and backyards. Many have already set up their charcoal or gas grills for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend -- that’s why this is National Barbeque Month and also National Hamburger Month. Outdoor grilling became popular in the 1920s. The first charcoal briquets were sold by Henry Ford, made from scrap wood left over from the body framing of his Model Ts. About 1-in-3 adults across the U.S. enjoys grilling food outside contributing to the 65 pounds of beef we each consume every year, along with 71 pounds of poultry and 48 pounds of pork.
