Protecting Workers in Puerto Rico from Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Other Microbial Exposure Risks

Zimmetry Environmental provides environmental and surface testing to identify MRSA and other superbugs to help safeguard workers, building occupants and confirm cleaning and disinfection procedures.

Healthcare facilities have infection control procedures in place due to the unique challenges they face from MRSA and other superbugs, but many workplaces where the 5 Cs may be common often do not.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is described by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) as a potentially dangerous type of staph bacteria. Staph, which is commonly carried on the skin or in the nose of healthy people, can sometimes cause infections, but most of these skin infections are minor.

With MRSA however, which are types of staph that are resistant to an antibiotic known as methicillin, and often resistant to other antibiotics as well, the infections can be very serious and sometimes even fatal. The infections are difficult and costly to treat, making transmission in the workplace a significant concern.

NIOSH reports that MRSA usually spreads by touching infected skin, but it can also spread by touching materials or surfaces that had contact with an infection. The agency states that certain factors make it easier for it to spread in the workplace and list their 5 Cs, which include:

  1. Crowding,
  2. Frequent skin-to-skin Contact,
  3. Compromised skin (cut, scrape or rash),
  4. Contaminated items and surfaces, and
  5. Lack of Cleanliness.

“Healthcare facilities have infection control procedures in place due to the unique challenges they face from MRSA and other superbugs, but many workplaces where the 5 Cs may be common often do not,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Outside of hospitals, long-term care facilities and nursing homes, outbreaks have occurred in schools and daycare centers, athletic facilities, military barracks, prisons and other places where people are in close proximity.”

Helping to prevent the spread of MRSA, C. diff and other superbugs in Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean are the infection control and building science professionals at Zimmetry Environmental. They offer surface and environmental testing to identify microbial pathogens to help prevent infections, to pinpoint the source of an outbreak if one has already occurred, and to confirm the effectiveness of cleaning and disinfection procedures in all types of high-risk environments. Zimmetry also recently sponsored an educational video about MRSA and the workplace that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/AmUhVU5QjYY
