Dropbox Alums Launch Twingate; An Alternative to the Corporate Virtual Private Network (VPN) Designed for the ‘Work from Anywhere’ Era

Twingate delivers the fastest experience for remote workers, can be deployed in less than 15 minutes, and eliminates the critical security vulnerabilities of corporate VPNs

Redwood City, California – WEBWIRE

It’s finally time to ditch your corporate VPN! After three months of testing, Twingate is now available worldwide as the fastest, most secure, and easiest-to-use product for accessing corporate applications, files, and other resources.

Founders Tony Huie (CEO), Alex Marshall (CPO), and Lior Rozner (CTO) created Twingate in the same way they built products at Dropbox and Microsoft - focusing on the security and ease of management needed by businesses, but also caring deeply about the usability and simplicity demanded by today’s employees.

Twingate is also excited to announce $17 million in Series A funding from leading venture capital firms WndrCo, 8VC, SignalFire, Green Bay Ventures and Dropbox founders Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi.

Work from Anywhere is the new normal

Corporate networks were designed for a world where employees worked in the office and accessed on-premise corporate resources. When someone traveled or worked from home, legacy products such as VPNs and firewalls were deployed to allow them to continue working.

Today, employees work from anywhere and access corporate resources that live everywhere. The legacy tools that worked two decades ago now result in laggy Zoom calls, sluggish Jira instances, and overworked IT teams. More importantly, the structural security vulnerabilities in those legacy tools have led to countless major security breaches.

Twingate was designed from the ground up for today’s Work from Anywhere world.  Twingate enables companies to secure their critical resources while offering a seamless experience for remote employees and simple management for IT admins.

“Twingate allowed us to very easily move to a model of zero-trust networking and drop our previous OpenVPN-based solution entirely,” said Jordan Brown, Engineering Manager at Homebase and Twingate customer. “Setting up Twingate was incredibly simple.”

Key end-user benefits include:

  • Mesh network overlay vs. Hub and spoke With Twingate’s mesh network overlay, users gain direct access to the information and applications they need more quickly than with a traditional hub and spoke network model.

  • Smart tunneling In 2020, the lines between work and home life have blurred as people use one laptop for all their online activities. Twingate ‘auto-segregates’ traffic: only a user’s business traffic goes to the company’s network and their personal traffic remains private.

  • Patented network congestion optimization technology – Twingate establishes multiple parallel data connections to enable the fastest potential connection speed. No more lost or sluggish connections.

  • ‘Dropbox-style’ experience – Twingate runs in the background and requires minimal user interaction. Set it and forget it.

Key enterprise/IT security benefits:

  • Zero trust security - Twingate allows organizations to adopt a zero trust security posture to secure access to private resources. Twingate continuously authorizes each network request and enables companies to implement granular, least-privileged access permissions.

  • Multiple cryptographic security checks per connection – Every connection through Twingate requires passing multiple security checks to provide multiple layers of security.

  • Network cloaking - Twingate’s network architecture allows companies to make their private networks invisible to attackers by eliminating public attack surfaces such as public VPN gateways.

  • Simple to deploy - Twingate can be deployed in 15 minutes or less into any existing network environment whether on-premises or cloud and integrates with major identity providers such as Okta, Google, and Microsoft -- offering fast time-to-value.

“We’re building a solution for a world in which workers will never come back into an office and remote work will just be ‘work’,” said Twingate co-founder and CEO Tony Huie.

”Every company in the WndrCo portfolio is rethinking how they work from the ground up. Corporate VPNs have been hated by IT and employees for over two decades. Twingate finally solves the ubiquitous ‘VPN problem’ - no more public attack surfaces, choppy Zoom calls, time-consuming deployments, and unnecessarily expensive network infrastructure,” said Sujay Jaswa, Founder/Managing Partner of Wndrco and Chairman of Twingate.

“Distributed work is the new reality. Tony and Alex played a major role in bringing Dropbox’s products to business customers, and I’m excited that they’re doing for the corporate network what Dropbox did to cloud storage and file sharing,” said Drew Houston, Founder & CEO of Dropbox.

”Remote access has long been a neglected but critical part of how employees get work done, but now in a post-Covid world, it is mission-critical for companies to rethink their approach. Twingate is the first product we’ve come across in this market that combines bullet-proof security with a seamless experience for IT admins and end-users alike,” said Joe Lonsdale, Co-founder of Palantir and Founder/General Partner at 8VC.
