Hereford, AZ – WEBWIRE

“An intriguingly immersive perspective on teaching kids to correlate numbers with sounds, spelling, and other word-structure similarities in a fun and engaging way that is sure to spark a healthy curiosity in your child towards the pursuit of learning more words and numbers.”

This book takes you inside the number Ten by showing the different personalities of the digits, One and Zero. All is well while working in the bank for dimes but during non-working hours there is tension between these digits. One ends up in lots of trouble because of his greed, while Zero has the job of comforting and helping him survive his 10 months sentence inside the penitentiary. Students of all elementary ages find these characters amusing, the math problems intriguing and the play on the word “Ten” surprising.

After getting tossed off the Clock by The Exasperated Clock, Ten got a job working in a bank for dimes. Unfortunately, Ten ended up going to a penitentiary for stealing dimes from the bank. It wasn’t like Ten was a bad number but just a bit greedy. However, it was the digit, One, that caused all the problems. Zero had nothing to do with the crime. It was hard on One to be in the prison but each of Zero’s 10 visits gave One a new way to think about his predicament.

Kids listen intensely for the many words in the story containing ten. The Magic Binary Trick intrigues the children’s curiosity and awareness of the magic of math. The math dice game as well helps kids discover the versatility and creativity of making numbers equal 10. After reading this book, kids often have suggestions to extend the connections with Ten to other things. About the Author

Debbie Hickman grew up in Idaho and she is presently living in Sierra Vista, Arizona after teaching and/or living in various places around the US and the world:  Seattle, Bahrain, India, Arizona, Kuwait, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Malaysia and Thailand.

While writing math curriculum for the Ganado Public school which is on the Navajo reservation in northern Arizona, Debbie discovered that several mathematicians referred to numbers as their friends. That idea intrigued her enough that she started thinking of possibilities for how numbers could take on various personalities, problems and wisdom. Her students’ encouraging responses to “What’s Up Seven?” and “The Exasperated Clock” have kept her imagining more possibilities for the potential of numbers.
