A teacher and children’s writer Debbie Hickman helps children enjoy numbers and develop their competencies for math with her independently published picture storybook “What’s Up, Seven?” (2015).

At the beginning of “What’s Up, Seven?,” Seven is miserable because he has been thrown off the clock, not needed anymore by Snow White, and has been fired for sleeping on the job of keeping track of the days of the week. Heeding the advice of his friend, Eight, he rolls the dice to see if he could be special after all. Seven often hires students to roll the dice to help him see why he could be special. Seven eventually discovers that he holds a very valuable place in the world. In the end, he gets a job that suits him and is forever grateful to his friend Eight.

“What’s Up, Seven?” is a whimsical and imaginative story that will keep the “magic” alive for math, reading, and friendship for children of all ages. As the young readers enjoy the engaging story, amusing dialogue, and colorful illustrations, they learn to see numbers as their “friends”, sharpen their math skills, improve their reading comprehension, and gain new vocabulary.

Author Bio

Debbie grew up in northern Idaho and now lives in Sierra Vista, Arizona. She has been a teacher in Arizona and several international schools (Kuwait, India, Bahrain, Turkey, Kazakhstan, and Malaysia). While working on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona she was inspired to think of numbers as friends and began writing stories that personify numbers.  As a children’s book author, she writes stories about how each number evolves in their “life” beyond the clock. So far, she has published “The Exasperated Clock,” “What’s Up, Seven?,” “The Inside Story of Ten,” and “Six the Scientist.” She loves the creative freedom of having the numbers as characters. She will continue writing stories for the other numbers who were tossed off the clock. She welcomes invitations to read her books and give presentations on writing to schools.
