Springer Nature Group opens new IT hub in Lisbon

International research publisher begins hiring software developers, data scientists and IT project managers

WEBWIRE

The international scientific publisher Springer Nature starts today the process of integrating its first collaborators in Lisbon, where it will create more than 30 new jobs by the end of 2020. This is the first stage of a long-term development strategy based on the creation of a innovation center leveraged by human resources strongly specialized in Information Technologies, such as software programmers, project managers, data scientists and software analysts in Information Technologies.

The Springer Nature Group is part of some of the scientific publications with the greatest global recognition, such as Nature, considered the most influential journal in the world, Nature Research, Springer, BMC and Palgrave Macmillan. Springer Nature presents a remarkable record of scientific publication that is supported by more than 3,000 indexed scientific journals responsible for the publication of 340,000 articles during 2019, which were also associated with the publication of more than 13,000 books. It should also be noted that for the past twenty years, the company has been leading the transition to open access scientific publications (Open Access), and continues to invest strategically in the development of its digital infrastructure to offer its customers a superior quality service. .

With around 10,000 employees spread over more than 50 countries, Springer Nature assumes itself as an essential reference for the production of knowledge through the publication of high quality content that contributes daily to the discovery of new scientific solutions. In the past few months, the company has contributed significantly to the global response to the pandemic situation, by allowing free access to more than 19,000 COVID-19 related articles and book chapters, as well as the publication of more than 500 new targeted articles specifically for this theme, which resulted in an increase of about 45% in online access to its contents.

In order to strengthen the leadership position in building the future of scientific publications, Springer Nature has defined a strategic vision based on the expansion of its digital and technological resources. Currently, the company has about 450 IT specialists working in a network from different geographical points such as London, Berlin, Pune, New York, Madrid, Dordrecht and Heidelberg. These multidisciplinary teams are responsible for the development of digital products and services in order to meet the needs of users and the scientific community, thus supporting the company’s strategic objectives.

In this context, Jan-Erik de Boer, CIO of Springer Nature, points out that: “Digital technology and the consequent implementation of innovative systems and workflows are fundamental vectors for our business. When we think about expansion, we identify Lisbon as a strategic hotspot that will allow us to reinforce our multidisciplinary teams and give greater support to our global digital publications. We are very happy to be able to start welcoming our first employees and look forward to forming an excellent team throughout this year. For now, we work remotely and collaboratively, and we will continue to materialize the intention to settle in a permanent location in the coming months. "

Taking advantage of this new location in Lisbon, and the numerous additional benefits - such as private health insurance, time allocation (10% of working time) for creative projects or even teleworking flexibility, we are convinced that Springer Nature presents itself as a company with a strong potential for attractiveness in southern Europe. Additional information on how technology is impacting the area of scientific publication, as well as on the career positions in the company currently open, can be accessed here .
