Jan 8, 2007 - CellaVision AB (publ), developer and provider of world leading image analysis based systems for blood cell identification, has received the first order for a digital cell morphology system from St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto. Additionally, a multi-system order was placed by Hamilton Healthcare Sciences, St. Joseph’s Healthcare and McMaster University, as part of their Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program. The orders are a result of the need for expanded morphology skills, increased laboratory productivity, improved turnaround time and standardization in routine hematology testing.

St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto, and Hamilton Healthcare Sciences, Hamilton, are the first organizations in Canada to acquire the CellaVision™ DM96 and CellaVision™ DM8 analyzers. The products were chosen to open up new ways of handling manual differentials and to significantly reduce time and expense in routine hematology testing. By automating the manual differential, increased speed and reduced turnaround time are offered together with quality enhancement. Storing patient slides as images enables both remote viewing, as well as access to the patient’s historical images.

Yvonne Mårtensson CEO at CellaVision said: "We are extremely enthusiastic about entering the Canadian market. Numerous interviews are telling us that CellaVision’s technology is ideally suited to meet the needs of the regional health networks and the great expanse of geography that often separates the patient from expert opinion.”

St. Michael’s Hospital
St. Michael’s Hospital, a teaching hospital fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, is committed to excellence in patient care, research and education; it is this commitment to excellence that led them to become the first hospital in Canada to embrace automated digital cell morphology

Dr. Brian Sheridan, Head, Division of Hematological Pathology, said: “For the Hematology Laboratory at St. Michael’s Hospital, the implementation of the DM96 will enable us to reduce manual intervention, improve reporting consistency while bringing labor-saving efficiency and faster turnaround times. The CellaVision DM96 will fill one of the remaining missing pieces in the Hematology Laboratory’s quest for total automation in routine testing and will endow us with a very useful tool for teaching staff and students in hematological morphology"

Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program
The Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program provides centralized laboratory expertise and supports five hospitals plus a cancer centre which comprise Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph’s Healthcare. Hamilton Health Sciences serves more than 2.3 million residents of Hamilton and central west Ontario and is the regional centre for burns, trauma, cardiac, stroke, neurosurgery, pediatrics, digestive diseases, high-risk obstetrics, cancer, orthopedics and rehabilitation services. As an academic teaching hospital affiliated with McMaster University and Mohawk College, Hamilton Health Sciences is committed to providing exemplary healthcare for the people and communities served, and advancing excellence in education and health research. At St. Joseph’s Hospital, an investment of over $136 million is transforming the facility into a 600-bed plus, multi-site academic health sciences centre. This represents an innovative and technologically advanced approach to clinical care, academics, and diagnostics. St. Joseph’s Hospital is home to the world- renowned Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health, the Centre for Minimal Access Surgery, and the much respected Father Sean O’Sullivan Research Centre with its satellite organization the Centre for the Evaluation of Medicine.

The Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program chose CellaVision technology as way to solve the very real problem of maintaining blood cell morphology expertise across multiple hospitals 24 hours a day. “A combination of CellaVision DM8 and DM96 systems allows us to scan in a slide made at any hospital site and perform reviews in one location”, said Kim Hartill-Dadson, Special Hematology Manager at Hamilton Health Sciences. “Hemato¬pathologists and Oncologists throughout our system are excited to have real-time access to their patient’s cell images today, and to be able to view previous slides, even if the patient’s blood was taken at a different hospital.”
