Eni joins the Voluntary Principles Initiative

The Annual Plenary Meeting 2020 of the Voluntary Principles Initiative (VPI), a multi-stakeholder initiative dedicated to ensuring human rights in security operations, has unanimously approved Eni’s admission as an “Engaged Corporate Participant”.

Eni’s membership of the VPI further strengthens the company’s commitment to working with institutions to affirm respect for fundamental human rights principles in managing the required security operations.

The Voluntary Principles Initiative was established in 2000 to bring together governments, major international NGOs and the biggest companies in the mining, natural resources development and energy sectors in a dialogue to combat security-related human rights violations and abuses. The VPI publishes a set of principles that have become a globally recognised benchmark, focusing on the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide and the constructive role that business, governments and civil society can play together in furthering these fundamental objectives.

In line with these principles, Eni’s operational practices have included initiatives for a number of years that enable its Security function to hold training and awareness initiatives for representatives of local institutions in 14 countries, as well as to include human rights clauses in contracts for the supply of security services.

Eni’s firm commitment in this area underlines the importance that it attaches to protecting human rights and, as an international corporation, its abiding view of diversity as a valuable and indispensable asset.
