Länsförsäkringar Bank launches world’s first sustainable payment cards made of recycled plastic

The new card technology will save up to 75 percent of the CO2 emissions involved in payment card production.

TietoEVRY has had a close cooperation with Länsförsäkringar Bank since 2006 as a supplier of card services and mobile payments, delivering the entire value chain of card services from card issuing, card production to security solutions and fraud monitoring. Now, LF Bank is migrating its total debit and credit card base to MasterCard utilizing sustainable cards provided and personalised by TietoEVRY Card Services in its production sites in Riga, Latvia and Vantaa, Finland.

All new cards from LF Bank will now be made of recycled PETG (rPETG) plastic. This saves 75 percent of the CO2 emissions involved in plastic card production compared with PVC, which is normally used as raw material in payment cards. Today, PETG is widely used to make bottles and other plastic containers.

LF Bank’s new payment cards are the first in the world made exclusively of recycled PETG. This is made possible by TietoEVRY in close cooperation with its suppliers to combine the latest card technologies with TietoEVRY’s personalisation capabilities. The cards are assembled utilising TietoEVRY’s networks and suppliers, focusing on green services and solutions. Contributing to a greener and more sustainable way of living and consuming is important for both companies.
