China’s eastern city Nanjing will hold 2020 Nanjing Tech Week (22-26 June 2020) virtually for the first time, showcasing break-through technologies. While temporary travel restrictions make a large international gathering difficult, by going online, the second Nanjing Tech Week has turned a negative into a positive, enabling the event to reach over one million people globally.

With the theme of “Clouds Gathering at the World’s Summit,” the online global nature of the event is being billed as an “International Circle of Friends” in a clear reference to WeChat’s ubiquitous “Moments” feature. The event will see virtual exhibitions of over 460 latest technologies, landmark projects, solutions for local developments, as well as video displays and 25 webinars. Conferences will be held remotely with scientists, entrepreneurs, investors and bankers participating via video link supported by 5G, VR and AR technologies. The online audiences across all online events is expected to exceed one million making it one of the biggest tech weeks ever hosted.

As one of the signature activities of the 2020 Nanjing Tech Week, an entrepreneurship contest has so far attracted hundreds of projects including those in the fields of software information services, new energy vehicles, biomedicine, AI, and integrated circuits. The finals will be held on 25 June in Nanjing, with Hangzhou and Moscow and St. Petersburg as two virtual venues.

Through open cooperation, open innovation and open sharing, it is hoped to promote the Nanjing investment environment to both domestic and foreign investors. Over 3,000 participants have confirmed their attendance to date, including Chinese and overseas academicians, senior government officials, relevant government agencies, presidents of universities and research institutes, prominent entrepreneurs and investors.

At the Nanjing-Paris Partnership Innovation Cooperation session, Hollande, former French President and Qin Shuo, former editor-in-chief of China Business News, will deliver keynote speeches. China and France will share a dialogue on the themes of Sino-French industrial innovation and culturally urban innovation, and will sign contracts around park cooperation and innovation platforms. In addition, the Chinese and French Enterprise Club will also be announced, which will enable Chinese and French entrepreneurs to knowledge share, discuss and work on business opportunities and share resources.

Another key pillar of the event is the “Cloud Global Summit” section including three sub-sections of guest country connection: Guest-to-Guest Connections, T20 Innovation Cooperation, and Overseas Partner Innovation Dialogue. T20 is the term coined to collectively describe 20 overseas countries or regions which Nanjing Tech Week deems innovators. We can expect video speeches from high-level officials of guest countries, a T20-Nanjing cooperation achievement exposition, a T20 Innovation City and a Governance Forum.

Another session at Nanjing’s Tech Week is the T20 Gulou-Edinburgh Innovation Dialogue where British startups will engage in a dialogue on the theme of innovation. Dr. Simon Gage, CEO of Edinburgh International Science Festival, will discuss the Edinburgh Science Festival and unveil the exhibition “A Human Touch: How We Have Shaped Our Planet.”

Throughout the week, Nanjing will also work with other famous cities such as London, Orvieto, Berlin and Amsterdam and discuss the topics of culturally empowered cities, innovative development, green and smart agriculture, and other new development paths.

According to Liu Hongwen, who heads up the international arm of the Innovation Week Organising Committee:

“We hope that each event can be closely integrated with the development advantages of Nanjing and the characteristics of each sector. While highlighting the in-depth participation of talent, enterprises and institutions, they also illustrate the mutual support and deep integration of both innovative city construction and the development of landmark industries.

“A series of activities will create a window to tell the world about the urban development concept and practical actions of Nanjing, with the aim of supporting innovation and entrepreneurship, so as to attract domestic and foreign innovation resources to gather in Nanjing.”
