According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the presence of mold is very common in buildings and homes. The agency goes on to report that mold will grow in places with a lot of moisture, such as around leaks in roofs, windows or pipes, or where there has been flooding.
 
It is well known that exposure to elevated levels of mold can cause health issues for some people. The CDC states: Some people are sensitive to molds. For these people, exposure to molds can lead to symptoms such as stuffy nose, wheezing, and red or itchy eyes or skin. Some people, such as those with allergies to molds or with asthma, may have more intense reactions.
 
Some types of mold associated with indoor growth can also cause opportunistic infections in people with a weakened or suppressed immune system. This is why the presence of mold in places like hospitals, nursing homes and long-term care facilities can be especially concerning.
