Siemens and Crossbeam Systems enter into cooperation on security solutions for telecommunications networks

WEBWIRE

Munich, Jan 9, 2007 - Siemens Networks and Crossbeam Systems Inc. of Boxborough, Massachusetts (USA), have concluded a framework contract for delivery and maintenance of Crossbeam’s Unified Threat Management (UTM) platforms. These platforms are used in the security solutions of mobile and fixed carriers’ networks. Siemens is expanding its product portfolio with the so-called multi-application security switches and offering the accompanying consulting, integration and maintenance services.

The cooperation is based on an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) contract which Siemens procures the UTM platforms from Crossbeam Systems and offers them to its customers together with the security services. Crossbeam’s UTM platform consolidates a variety of best-of-breed security applications such as firewall, spam filter, anti-virus, web security and intrusion prevention, used to recognize and repel attacks on the telecommunications network in a single device. Within the partnership with Crossbeam Systems, Siemens will provide the design know-how for security solutions and network integration, as well as sales and technical support. The services from Siemens include loading software upgrades, designing a secure network structure, test runs, integration of the UTM platforms, maintenance and, if required, permanent operation including round-the-clock monitoring. Consolidating security solutions on one platform leads to extensive savings in infrastructure and operating costs, and meets the high demands of the network carriers in terms of availability, scalability, flexibility and network performance.

Daniel-Rui Felicio, head of the Carrier Services Division at Siemens Networks, comments: “With these multi-application security switches we can offer mobile and fixed network carriers under rising threats from the internet with high-end UTM solutions to increase their security and cut their operating costs. At the same time, Crossbeam will benefit from the fact that Siemens is a globally reckoned security solutions integrator and service provider for carriers worldwide.”

“This partnership introduces world-class UTM solutions to Siemens’ extensive base of carrier customers,” said Peter George, CEO, Crossbeam Systems. “To combat increasingly complex threats, these new converged networks require the flexibility that only a UTM platform can provide.”

General market observations by IDC and other rating agencies have shown a strong trend towards consolidation of complex security infrastructures into simple and high-performing UTM systems. The UTM market is expected to be one of the strongest growth segments in the IT network market in the next few years with an annual growth rate of about 50% until 2009.
