Best-Selling Author Shares New Advice in “Your 168: Finding Purpose and Satisfaction in a Values-Based Life”

In his new book, Harry Kraemer, former CEO of Baxter and award-winning professor at Kellogg School of Management, shares actionable advice on the age-old challenge of finding balance in life amid built-in distractions and never-ending to-do lists.  In Your 168: Finding Purpose and Satisfaction in a Values-Based Life” (Wiley, 2020), Kraemer shares advice on how to uncover obstacles and lead a values-based life.

“My first two books were about becoming a values-based leader and creating a values-based organization. Now, the next natural step is to share how to pursue a values-based life,” said Kraemer. “This isn’t a time-management book – this book aims to help people be self-aware and develop productive habits. I also share advice on how to build new habits and find life balance in real time.”

The book includes personal stories and insights from Kraemer, along with tools to help the reader discover where they actually devote their time – or what he calls the 168 hours in every week. Kraemer shares that rather than thinking of 24 hours in a day – he recommends looking at the whole week of 168 hours. He organizes this into a “life grid” with buckets for career, family, faith/spirituality, health/sleep, fun/recreation/reading, and making a difference.  Each person can allocate the hours they spend in each bucket to then determine if they’re hitting their goals and where they’re spending their time. Kraemer finds that people are hungry to take control of their lives and reprioritize.

At a time when most professionals are facing uncertainty and a new work-life, Kraemer’s advice can identify how to commit to their values and priorities. In the book, Kraemer shares how to:

  • Use self-reflection to identify what matters most and become more aware of how you spend your time
  • Evaluate priorities such as career, family, health, recreation, spirituality and philanthropy
  • Avoid unpleasant “surprises” or getting burned out
  • Experience better balance in real time amid shifting priorities, both personally and professionally
