Building Safety Month in Puerto Rico and the Importance of Indoor Environmental Quality

Zimmetry Environmental provides indoor environmental quality testing and consulting services to identify and mitigate exposure risks and comfort issues in buildings throughout the Caribbean.

People today are much more aware of the significance of safe buildings and indoor environmental quality due to the novel coronavirus and its impact here in Puerto Rico and across the world.

For 40 years, May has been recognized as Building Safety Month. Following the outbreak of COVID-19 that temporarily shut down millions of buildings across the globe and caused others to change the way they operate, building safety is now more important than ever.

This year’s theme is “Safer Buildings, Safer Communities, Safer World.” It is supported by the International Code Council and other partners. A major area of focus during the month of recognition includes educating people about the need to be prepared for natural disasters in homes, schools and businesses. It also includes the importance of clean water and safety measures to protect building water systems from contamination from organisms such as Legionella, the cause of Legionnaires’ disease and Pontiac Fever.

“People today are much more aware of the significance of safe buildings and indoor environmental quality due to the novel coronavirus and its impact here in Puerto Rico and across the world,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “At Zimmetry Environmental, we are strong advocates of Building Safety Month. Our entire business model for the past 18 years has revolved around providing safe and healthy building environments in residential, commercial and institutional properties.”

Zimmetry’s local experts work to create safe buildings by offering indoor environmental quality (IEQ) testing, monitoring and consulting services. They provide testing for biological and chemical pollutants, infectious pathogens, asthma triggers, allergens and respiratory irritants. Their building assessments determine if HVAC systems are providing optimal indoor conditions and identify water damage that can lead to mold growth. Zimmetry is also regularly called upon to investigate dangers associated with asbestos, lead-based paints and other exposure risk. If a building assessment or IEQ testing indicates issues, the professionals at Zimmetry can help to eliminate or mitigate the concern. Many of these same services also help to keep companies and institutions in regulatory compliance.
