British Vogue features Dame Judi Dench as the oldest ever Vogue cover star

British Vogue features legendary actor Dame Judi Dench on the cover of its June issue. She becomes the oldest ever person to grace a Vogue cover.

On stage and on screen, from Shakespeare to Bond, Dame Judi Dench, aged 85, has spent her life delighting the world.

Edward Enninful, British Vogue’s editor-in-chief, comments: “I can’t tell you how pleased I am to see Judi Dench, the unassailable queen of stage and screen, starring on her first ever Vogue cover at the age of 85. Photographed in early February and interviewed under the looming spectre of Covid-19 over the following weeks, Judi is the oldest person ever to grace our cover, and she brings great perspective and a message of hope from her own quarantine in the English countryside. Ever modest, the dame is not a fan of the term national treasure. But treasure her we do. Now more than ever.”

Throughout the issue, Dame Judi speaks about her legendary acting career, her past loves and living in quarantine.

Interviewed by Giles Hattersley, British Vogue’s features director, Dame Judi commented on self-isolating at her home in Surrey during Covid-19: “I am sure I feel like everyone else, such unprecedented times are quite hard to comprehend.”

“What is a good thing is that it has made people aware of the predicament of others who are completely alone,” she says, thoughtfully. “If a great deal of kindness comes out of this, then that will be a plus.”
