Identifying Environmental Asthma Triggers in Puerto Rico to Support Asthma Awareness Month

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that asthma is one of the most common lifelong chronic diseases. The agency also states that 1 in 13 Americans (more than 25 million) lives with asthma, a disease affecting the lungs and causing repeated episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and coughing.
 
To spread awareness of the disease and steps people can take to manage their condition and help prevent new cases, the month of May is recognized as Asthma Awareness Month. This is important as although there is no cure for asthma yet, asthma can be controlled through medical treatment and management of environmental triggers.
 
Indoor environmental quality is of critical importance as most people spend 90% of their time indoors. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor allergens and irritants play a significant role in triggering asthma attacks. Triggers are things that can cause asthma symptoms, an episode or an attack. For those who have asthma, they may react to just one trigger or may find that several things act as triggers. 
 
“Asthma triggers vary from person to person, but some of the most common ones include exposure to tobacco smoke, dust mites, outdoor air pollution, chemical irritants, cockroach allergen, pets, mold, nitrogen dioxide, and smoke from burning wood or grass,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Asthmatics can prevent attacks if they learn how to avoid triggers, but before they can do that, they need to know what they are being exposed to in their home, school or work environment.”
