The bright side of the COVID-19 Pandemic - From Compression to Compassion

In response to the shortage of masks and other PPE (Personal protective equipment) during the COVID-19 pandemic, Aaron Fisher, co-founder of Copper88 and Toronto local, came up with an ingenious interim solution.
 
Recognizing that with the PPE shortage many front-line workers are forced to reuse their masks, Fisher created an antibacterial mask cover, using his company’s copper embedded fabric, to place on top of surgical and N95 masks as an additional way of keeping workers safe longer.
 
Studies conducted in the United States show that the coronavirus can live and remain active on a copper surface for only 4 hours, which is significantly lower than the 48-72 hours for plastic and stainless-steel surfaces. Copper88 is a company that uses patented copper embedded fabric to make high-end compression garments such as shirts and wrist/knee/ankle sleeves.
 
Copper88’s patented 88% embedded copper material is lightweight, provides superior wick ability, as well as antibacterial and anti-odour properties. Most importantly, the copper ion properties last after multiple wears and washes, making this a durable albeit interim solution during the current crisis.
 
“Since 2015 we have been studying the effects that copper has on bacteria. We have found that within a 24-hour period, our fabric has been able to kill over 99% of certain strains of bacteria and even after 40 washes that percentage stays the same. We have also had success against MRSA and are continuously working to test it. Now with so much news, articles and medical journals coming out about what happens to the coronavirus on copper surfaces we are more hopeful about the power and the role copper will play in the lives of others,” said Aaron Fisher.

So far, Copper88 has donated more than 45,000 mask covers in Asia and North America; and the company is currently developing an antibacterial mask that will be sold to the public soon.
