Braaibroodjie – the staple dish of any braai (barbeque) -- may look like an ordinary grilled cheese sandwich, but it’s filled with tomatoes and onions as well as cheddar cheese.  Braaibroodjies are toasted over coals until they’re golden brown and the cheese is oozing.
 
South African dried meat delicacies come in a variety of textures and flavours. The most popular are Beef Biltong (strips of beef) and Droewors (sausages). Both are marinated in spices before being hung to dry.
 
Syrup-soaked Koeksisters are a quintessential South African treat enjoyed from Capetown to Johannesburg and everywhere in between. The braided fried pastry squirts sweet syrup when you bite into it.
 
Malva pudding is a favourite South African comfort food.  Made with apricot jam and served warm with custard or ice cream, it has a spongy caramelized texture.
